There are several reasons why you may want to manage the smells and fragrances in your home.
Maybe you’re highly active in sports and keep a lot of smelly equipment around, or you’re a cigar aficionado that smokes indoors on occasion, or maybe you just want to help your home smell better. Here are five tips for how you can better manage the fragrances in your home.
#1 —Deodorizer Sets & Kits
You can buy special sets or kits of ‘deodorizers’ that help absorb bad odors from sweaty gym equipment, litter boxes, and so on.
They are usually made up of charcoal that can simply be left in a given space as big as an open room or a small as a closet. The charcoal absorbs odors, allergens, pollutants and moisture to purify the air around it, and can last for several years depending on the quality of the deodorizers.
#2 —Scented Candles
You can also buy candles that have any type of smell you could possibly want, from fruits and food to flowers and other materials. Even just placing the candles in strategic locations can help improve the fragrance of the area, but you can also get candles specifically to help eliminate bad odors in your home.
Or, if you just want the make a room have a certain smell regularly or for special occasions, you can set them around a room and light them accordingly to let the scented smoke permeate through the room.
#3 — Air Purifiers
If you have smelly pets or like to smoke in parts of your home, you may want something a bit more thorough in purifying the allergens and chemicals in the air along with the odor, you can get an air purifier.
Specifically, you want a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Purifier that is more effective at removing the chemicals from things like smoke or pet hair and dandruff. For certain odors you will want to do your research, as some air purifiers are not as effective at getting rid of odors as they are at getting rid of dust, allergens and other airborne chemicals.
#4 —Air Fresheners
You can buy devices that plug into an outlet anywhere in your home and then use the electricity to heat up scented oils to spread the scent around the room in little bursts. They can be effective at adding a subtle fragrance to a neutral room if you are not much of a candle person.
However, plug-in air fresheners are not the best at removing or covering up bad odors from things like sweaty gym bags or litter boxes. For that type of scenario, you should use air freshener sprays in the smelly area once a day until the smell is gone — they work far more effectively.
#5 — Keep Windows Open
For things like stale or stuffy air, and to help any bad odors from building up in your home, you should always allow for optimal air flow. That means leaving some windows open to let new air from the outside into your home, and so the old and smelly interior air has other ways to be sent outside.
You can also set up things like ceiling fans, window fans and exhaust fans to help pull in, circulate, and draw out the air in your home for optimal air circulation.
